Sustainability Self Assessment

Fagunia is our attempt to lead a sustainable, zero waste, and self sufficient life. While we have a long way to go before we can be termed 100% sustainable, over the years, we have progressed quite a lot on this journey. Below is our self-assessed performance on the core sustainability issues that are common to most popular sustainability reporting frameworks and standards.

Energy85%

Energy

We use a 4KW solar on grid solar system and a 1KW solar off grid system to produce power renewably for our needs through solar power. We use LED lights throughout to reduce our energy usage. We use a solar powered water heater for providing hot water. We do not use fossil fuel powered generators and only use a solar powered inverter and batteries for essential power backup.

Water55%

Water

We have a rainwater harvesting system that collects and stores rain water. Currently, we can store about 30,000 litres of such water. We are also trying to slow down the rain water flowing down our slopes to let it percolate into the soil. We also mulch as much possible in our fields to keep soil moist for longer and reduce the need for watering. Local grass that is hardy and requires minimal water just in summer has been used in our  garden areas. Going forward, we hope to increase our capacity to capture and store rainfall.

Food35%

Food

We are currently practicing a permaculture approach to agriculture on our farm. We grow quite a few seasonal and organic vegetables, herbs and fruits for our personal use and either store or sell the excess produce. Currently, about 2 months in a year we are able to source all the vegetables we need either from our farm or neighboring farms. However, we are still dependent on other farms or the market for sourcing the majority of our food. We hope to reduce this as much as possible in the coming years by increasing the diversity and quantity of food crops we grow.

Waste65%

Waste

We compost all our wet waste. We encourage our guests to take back any single use waste they generate during their stay. Our grey water is filtered through a multi-layer filter bed and infiltrated into the soil. Our black water is collected in an on site reusable twin pit sewage system that will safely decompose the waste into natural fertilizer that can be used a soil enhancer on our farm. We also use canna and banana plant circles to filter some of of our grey water. Any plastic waste we generate is safely burnt in a closed wall incinerator and the burnt waste is collected and safely disposed at a waste collection centre. We collect all non-burnable plastic and metal waste and then drop it off at a waste centre. We collect glass bottles and up cycle them for different purposes. We are slowly reducing our usage of chemical cleaners by making our own bioenzyme. We have reduced or stopped buying by making at home everyday essentials like yogurt, ghee, paneer, garlic powder, ginger powder, chilli flakes/powder, turmeric powder, coriander powder, pickles, and bread. Our aim is to achieve zero waste circularity where all waste we produce is either recycled or upycled or decomposed into reusable natural fertilizer.

Community50%

Community

We employ only local villagers as staff and up skill them. We pay them a living wage as per current wage standards for our region. We provide them performance linked pay incentives. They have paid casual leaves and sick leaves. We also pay their salaries through direct bank transfers to encourage savings. We prefer to employ women as far as possible. We are also supporting the college education of one of our staff. We buy local as much as possible and employ local skilled and unskilled workmen as far as possible for ongoing repairs and maintenance. We are supporting the village primary and middle school by providing infrastructure support to setup a digital lab. We are currently exploring the implementation of a long term program to integrate co-curricular activities for the school children. We are hoping to expand our community support initiatives by understanding where the greatest need is.
